(Burlington, Vermont – February 13, 2010) Smoke could be seen across Burlington as an early morning fire broke out a little after 5 am in the north end of the city. At this hour, Red Cross Disaster Services personnel remain on the scene. “The five responding volunteers are all members of the Northern Vermont Chapter’s Disaster Action Team program,” said Timothy Stetson, Regional Chief Response Officer for the Red Cross, “they have responded to meet the needs of two families displaced by the early morning fire and to support the rehabilitation needs of fire fighters and other emergency personnel on the scene.”
The calls came in to the Northern Vermont Chapter’s Duty Officer at approximately 5:15 am this morning and immediately the Chittenden County Disaster Action Team, including team members skilled in mass care, client assistance and disaster mental health, was dispatched to the incident scene. The team responded to provide immediate emergency assistance to the families involved. “At every scene, families are interviewed to determine their immediate emergency needs,” says Chittenden County Disaster Action Team Leader Randall Zeno, “The Red Cross is primarily able to assist with emergency shelter, food, clothing, medical and disaster mental health services where a verified need exists and will support the families further by providing referrals to other community support resources.”
